The Hellhound is loose

…well not exactly loose. More like in the Ranch guild and available to you as a pet.  This is one mean animal and good to have on your side. Best attribute? Try it and decide for yourself because there are a couple of good ones.  But for me, it’s got to be the fact that he’s a fire breather. And can push a flame over a long distance.  Nice doggie..

This hound reminds me of the one encountered by Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes in the fantastic “The Hound of the Baskervilles”.  Read it if you haven’t already.  Here’s the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s description of the beast:

“A hound it was, an enormous coal-black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open mouth, its eyes glowed with a smouldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame. Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish be conceived than that dark form and savage face which broke upon us out of the wall of fog.”

Conan-Doyle isn’t one to hold much back is he?

In case you haven’t seen them, we have published a very useful set of video tutorials to help new or relatively inexperienced players learn the basics.  Check them out here.

We are certain that these will help users make a quick transition from the condition of being a baffled new user to an understanding of how to competently play the game.  If you have any suggestions for additional tutorials, feel free to make them here.  Thanks and enjoy!

The Winter Wolf is still available as this week’s limited Edition Pet. A picture of him can be seen in this Blog’s banner.  Otherwise check out this animated version of the beast.

Synthesized from Purple Liquid

The Wolf has special qualities, not to mention bling. He is freeze resistant and he can’t be easily petrified, which means if you travel either Towers IV, II, or especially VII, he’s the right companion.

Since we are on the subject of Tower VII, ever wonder what item will protect you from being iced by monsters like the Yeti in this tower?  Oddly enough, the answer is wine.  Use the wine card as you travel through this tower and you will be protected from becoming a block of ice.  The effect lasts about 10 minutes, so used wisely, you probably only need a single wine card to make it through the tower as a warm and toasty Guardian.

There are new contest items yet again today in the news section of the PuppetGuardian.com, so be sure to check them out.

More Contest Winning Items

As I mentioned earlier, Cold Breath has been creating and adding items designed by players in the Japanese version.  All the items are unique and worthy in their own way.  Here is a recent update with some of the items listed.

The New Sorcerer Line of Items

The Sorcerer line is cute, especially the tassels  on the hood and the crescent moon clasp.  Take a look at the image to the right.  It’s the original submission by a Japanese player.  You can click the image to see the full size.

The elegant Witch Doctors

One of the early contest releases was the Witch Doctor / Fallen Leaf line. It is a comprehensive set of items that built cleverly on the theme of fallen leaves.  It’s the second set of items on this same item update page from last Friday.  What’s interesting here are the new variations on the simple wooden staff.  My favorite piece is the elegant plaid men’s top.  I also like the boots.  Check out the detail in the original submission!

Since this week’s Pet Exchange campaign selection is the Fire Ball and because it is especially strong in Tower VI, maybe this is a good time to mention a couple of tried and true methods

Synthesized from 10 Corals

to avoid or at least reduce damage caused by fire from the Flame Ghosts, the Hellhounds, or of course, the Genie.  The first and best way is with a couple of Sand of Stars.  Use the Sand of Stars as soon as you see your first fire-breather.  You will be engulfed in blue bubbles and this will protect you from catching on fire, which as you might expect, is good because the longer you burn the more damage you sustain and the sooner you go down.  It’s good to have two cards because you’ll need two to make it through all the fields of the Tower, maybe even three.

Blue Bubbles of From the Sand of Stars

Make the Sand of Stars from 10 Corals found in Tower IV.  See Coral, DOES have some value after all.  If you don’t have Sand of Stars but have a lot of Shell Bugs, plucked from the bushes in Tower VI, use them to make a Fire Extinguisher.  The extinguisher won’t protect you from catching on fire, but will put it out once you do.  These are a couple of simple ways to save yourself a lot of trouble in Tower VI on the Road of the Magical Volcano.

You may have noticed, well I HOPE you’ve noticed, that we have been torridly updating items lately after not doing so for a while.  That alone is good news, but there’s something special about these items.  They have been designed by real Puppet Guardian players, like you.  Toward the end of last year, the Japanese version of Puppet Guardian, which the Japanese players like to call “PuppeGa”, held a contest in which they invited players to submit item designs.  The best designs would be selected and made into actual items.

This past Tuesday’s update features design contest winner items as does tonight’s update. Take a look, the quality of the design is very high and the players who have created these items clearly have a deep feeling for the game and its aesthetic.  These are truly wonderful items.  And we’ll be publishing more soon.

The update on Tuesday featured a Gold and Silk line of items that feel both exotic and regal at the same time.  Below is a picture of the original design submission.

One of my favorite submissions for the contest was a hand drawing, which as a mode of design made it different from most of the others; because most were computer generated.  It was one of tonight’s updates and includes the Zipper line of clothing as well as the Phoenix Staff (which delivers a “searing blast”,  by the way).  Here’s the drawing:

I think the Design Contest was one of the most successful events yet held by Cold Breath.  It may be time for us to do something like it on the English version.  What do you think?

This week we bring you a pet with a couple of unique advantages. It’s called Fire Ball and features unusual strength in the face of those monsters (mostly the Tower VI gang on Volcano Road) that fry us Guardians with a fire attack.  This little spark can torch those Monsters right back.  The other advantage of our friend the Fire Ball is that, just like the Flame Ghosts in Tower VI, it ain’t easy to bring down.  It’s an elusive little flame that avoids damage.

The concept of this Pet is based on the will-o’-wisp, also called will-o’-the-wisp.  A will-o’-wisp refers to a rare and mysterious light seen at night or dusk hovering over swamps or bogs that appears to wink at you as it flickers and glows.  Many who have seen a will-o’-wisp say that it dances away when approached.  As you can imagine, stories and lore that concern this phenomenon abound.

Some scientists have claimed  that the cause is chemical and occurs when decaying organic matter of a certain kind comes into contact with oxygen and then ignites.  But science, as we know, has been known to get what is difficult to explain and intermittent quite wrong.  I have a feeling that the will-o’-wisp is one such case.
